Ummm... especially i don't know how to describe this because i'm from Poland and i'm not so advanced in writing English explaining of some things, but i'll try.
You just need to take few tones of the same color, and use this ... correctly to the type of shading. Take an example from @Cyrille Yukimaru, he/she uses a simple method of shading, and make incredible things (for someones anyway...), or eventually from me, i too use quite-simple type of shading (check some things in my profile for look on it).
So, that's all.
Program what i prefer for it, is Gimp 2.6, perfect program for making such things in 2D and not only!
